Why is gas so much more in Phoenix? ›

Arizona doesn't have any oil refineries of its own, so almost all of the state's gasoline comes from our neighbors, California and Texas. The Phoenix Metro is supplied by refineries in California's Bay Area and it takes about seven days for a shipment of gasoline to arrive from there.

Arizona exemplifies the stress over housing. Over the past decade, the allure of suburban life under cloudless skies has swelled the population of greater Phoenix to five million from 4.2 million, according to census data. The influx pushed housing prices steadily higher.

One theory is that Phoenix uses a boutique fuel – a cleaner burning gasoline (CBG) to help reduce air pollution to meet federal air quality standards – which could cost more; but Tucson uses conventional gasoline – so boutique specifications can't be the crux of the issue here.
